Giving Your Garage a Makeover

Quite often it seems that we take the time to make the interior of our homes look great. We incorporate designer elements and pleasing colors. Everything is cozy and peaceful.

And then we step into the garage.

Maybe because not all of us spend an awful lot of time in there, we tend to forget about it. And while it certainly doesn’t always make sense to design a full-blown state-of-the-art garage (unless you use it for work purposes), taking the time to spruce it up can increase the value of your house.

Not to mention that if you are a mechanic or someone else who keeps a workshop in the garage and thus spends a lot of time there, you’ll appreciate a more uplifting atmosphere.

Many garages in older homes are dark, dingy spaces with exposed beams and not a lot of light. Garages in newer constructions are a bit nicer in that there’s usually more light, but they still aren’t much to get excited about, even for someone who spends a lot of time there. They all look the same: eggshell-colored walls (if not just straight-up drywall) and… well, that’s about it.

For anyone who spends even a minimal amount of time in the garage, waterproof interlocking panels are a great way to give that space a little extra boost. Choose a lighter color such as fantasia blue to open the space up. If you want to create a garage space unlike any other, consider going for a bolder color, like emerald.

We all know how messy garages can get. Spills, dust, and everything between can be difficult to remove. But because these panels are waterproof and non-porous, any messes you make while working in the garage are easily cleaned up. Go ahead and hose them off if you need to!

Creating a Romanesque Bedroom

Roman décor is very popular right now, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to bring a little bit of it to your own home, too. With its simplistic furnishings and light, neutral colors, the Roman decorating style can make for a calm, relaxing atmosphere. And because of the neutral tones, it’s neither too feminine nor too masculine.

A must-have staple for a Roman-themed room is some marbling on the walls. Décor Plastics can save you time here as thin and flexible slate veneers are fabulous as wall treatments. When choosing neutral colors for your walls, remember that darker shades will make the room appear smaller, while lighter neutral tones will open the space up.

As for the floors, you’ll probably want some kind of tiling that will complement your walls. Carpeting is not recommended for a Roman theme, though with the right style and color, you could make it work in a pinch. Tiled floor works best, followed by a lighter hardwood.

Any furniture you place in a Roman-themed room should have clean, simple lines. A canopy bed would be a great focal point, for example. Again, all bedding and upholstery should be in a neutral tone to match your walls and floors.

Because of the marbled walls, which really tie the Roman theme together, you don’t want too many other decorations, lest the room begin to look too busy. Sculptures – particularly ones that look distressed and old – are a possibility for dressing the room up a bit. Check out antique stores or flea markets to find sculpted busts. (Bonus points if you can find or fashion some kind of Romanesque pillar or column on which to display it!)

For a splash of color, consider adding some ivy or other plants to the room as accents.
